A year ago I decided to focus on relearning some of the technical aspects of painting. Specifically I wanted to get better at mixing colors accurately, improving my compositions, and being more disciplined and accurate. I thought that if I painted really small canvases that I could churn out dozens of paintings quickly and make lots of progress fast. What I came to realize was that I cared more about making good paintings, no matter what their size. And I was surprised to discover that a 3 1/2” tall painting takes just as much time to complete as a larger painting. So, yes, I’m learning to improve my technical skills, but I’m also learning that I won’t give up quality for speed. I also discovered that painting on such a small scale is really enjoyable. I love going into my studio and working with these little gems. They make me happy.
